Iaido is a Japanese sword style that is trained with both real swords and bokken (wooden sword). Characteristic of Iaido is to draw his sword and cut in the same movement. This is called Nuki-tsuke (pull-cut). Training takes place against an imaginary opponent. We never cut against each other.
Iaido is a Japanese mother budoart. Iaido can be described as the art of drawing the Japanese sword, katana. Characteristic of iaido is that the practitioner draws his sword and cut in the same movement. This is called Nuki-tsuke ( “draw-cut”) in Japanese.
All iaido performed as kata (pre-defined “mesh”), both training and competition. The practitioners wear Keikogi (training jacket) and Hakama (a broad, two-tier skirt with folds that are traditionally worn by samurai). During Hakama worn also obi, the belt, in which the sword is nedstucket to edge upwards.
Slightly curved sword form and the way they wore it on, alongside the body, made it went quickly to pull in a sudden attack. This feature technology developed into an art, which is currently practicing under well defined patterns of movement, so-called “kata, and seek to achieve perfection.
Iaido is trained with the bokken (wooden sword, also known as “bokuto”), Iaito (training sword made of metal, but without the edge) or Shinken (sharp sword) against an imaginary opponent. Practitioners chop never against each other.
There are a handful of different old iaido schools (Koryu), but among beginners is the “standard” ZNKR-iaidon common. Zen-Nippon Kendo Renmei (All-Japanese kendoförbundet) began in the 1970s with the work that led to the twelve kata forming ZNKR-iaidon, often called seitei-kata. Seitei-kata is primarily an attempt to create a cutting section of traditional iaido, to make iaidon more accessible, especially for kendo practitioners.
Iaido has very strong ties to kendo.
